The Scotch Reformer. Knox's Statue.—Place of the Reformer in Scottish History.—Mission of St. Colmnba.—Knox as Preacher.—His Religious and Academic Preparation for the Work of Reform.—State of Sco1land in the Sixteenth Century.—The Martyrs Hamilton and Wishart.—Decisive Sermon of Knox at Perth.—Queen Mary of Scots and the Reformer's Relation to Her. r I "HE commercial metropolis on the Clyde, the ancient -- St. Mungo's, Glasgow, has, in the course of its amazing growth, erected no monument so befitting its fame as the bronze of John Knox. It was the custom years ago, and possibly still is, to expose for sale miniature copies of this coloss of the national ecclesiastical chieftain, which looks down from its tall doric column in the Necropolis on the vast hive of business ; and with a similar piety to that of the good Alexander Severus, who, in Roman imperial days, gathered into his domestic oratory the busts of renowned seers, a Scot was often found setting up in his cabinet the venerable figure. The statue, modelled after an authentic portrait in possession of the University, and uncovered, in 1825, with a festal display of civic and religious devotion, exhibits the Reformer robed in the primitive presbyterian gown and cap, a long commanding beard streaming down his breast. At various visits to the city, as occasion allowed, the foot, especially on a Sunday, climbed to the noble height whichbears the monument; for there, in unison with thethoughts of faith and Christian valour which are inspired by the sight of it, the cathedral, the finest ecclesiastical relic of Scotland, reposes at its base, preserved from the 'rascally mob,' as the Reformer dubbed the ignorant zealots of his day, by the affection of the citizens. Can't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the OddsCan't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare - poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him The Fittest (Real) Man in America. In Can't Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential.
